Who is Can Assist

Can Assist is a grass roots, community based charity dedicated solely to supporting country people affected by cancer and their families.

For over 55 years we have been caring for country cancer patients. Today, we have 50 branches in country towns across rural and regional NSW, operated by 2,600 local volunteers who raise funds to support local families.

Due to travel and accommodation expenses, it can easily cost a country family affected by cancer up to five times more than a city family just to access treatment. The reality is that many country mums and dads simply can’t afford treatment, let alone the weeks spent away from their family and work.

What does Can Assist do?

Can Assist provides country families affected by cancer with:

  • Financial assistance through our local branches with things like medical, pharmaceutical, travel and personal costs;
  • Supported accommodation at Jean Colvin Cancer Centre in Sydney and Lilier Lodge in Wagga Wagga; and
  • Our new home based support service; Can Assist Viva Packs provide short term support of essential services to meet specific needs. The range of services may include but are not limited to: nursing, transport, child care, domestic help and respite care. The packs will be rolled out across the state this year.
